I’m so excited for your upcoming senior session with MollyMcPhoto! This isn’t just a photo shoot, it’s a celebration of who you are, everything you’ve accomplished, and all the big things ahead. Whether you're camera-shy or love to pose, my goal is to make this experience as fun, relaxed, and empowering as possible.


This guide is here to help you feel prepared and confident every step of the way. From outfits and hair to picking a location that fits your vibe, I’ve packed it with everything you need to know. I’ve also included tips from photographing hundreds of seniors over the years—so you’re getting tried-and-true advice that works.

Timing Matters

(Like…A LOT)

Your session has been scheduled around the best natural light of the day—what photographers lovingly call "golden hour." It’s when the sunlight is soft, warm, and magical (and much softer than the harsh overhead sun).


Because I shoot using natural light, the sun dictates our timeline.   So please, please plan to arrive on time—or even better, 10 minutes early. If you're late, we’ll have to shoot in less time or reschedule.


Here’s how to stay on track:

  • Check traffic before you leave (especially if we’re shooting on a weekday)
  • Have your outfits laid out the night before
  • Don’t plan hair/makeup to run up until session time—leave yourself buffer room
  • Bring everything you need in one tote or bag so you’re not scrambling

 

Location, Location, Location

The truth is, with the right lighting and posing, I can make just about any place look amazing. That said, the location you choose can help set the mood, style, and energy of your shoot—so it’s worth thinking about!


What’s your personal style?


Urban: Think murals, staircases, city buildings, rooftops.

Desert Vibes: Cacti, wide open landscapes, neutral tones.

Green Spaces: Parks, fields, gardens—rare gems in Phoenix!

Modern & Minimalist: Clean lines, modern buildings, high contrast.

Rustic/Natural: Trails, old barns, textured wood, nature paths.

Be Comfortable

  • If it feels itchy or tight—skip it.
  • Make sure your outfit passes the sit, walk, and twirl test! You’ll be moving around a lot!
  • Try everything on ahead of time. Sit, walk, pose in the mirror. If you feel confident and comfortable, you’re golden.

 

OUTfit color Tips

General rule of thumb: choose outfit colors based on location & skin tone


Desert Locations

Best: Neutrals, muted earth tones (sage, mustard, rust,

navy, cream, brown)

Avoid: Neons, bold primaries (hot pink, kelly green)


Greener Locations

Best: Warm jewel tones or soft pastels for contrast

Avoid: Olive, forest green, or tans that might blend too much


Lighter Complexion : Jewel tones, rich colors like plum, navy, emerald

Darker Complexion: You have tons of flexibility! Brights and neutrals both pop.


⚠️ Quick tip: Avoid tiny stripes (they create weird moiré patterns in camera), loud logos, or super shiny fabric.

 

Add Layers & Texture

  • Layers add movement, depth, and visual interest.
  • Try a flannel over a tee, a denim jacket over a dress.
  • Mix textures like lace + denim, flannel + corduroy.
  • Don’t underestimate the power of a good jacket or vest.

 

Accessorize!

Accessories are a great way to add personality to your look.


Ideas:

  • Statement earrings or layered necklaces
  • Hats
  • Fun different shoes for different outfits
  • Scarves, watches, sunglasses


Pack extra options—we can always swap out mid-session!

 

Variety is Key

Aim to bring 2–3 outfits with different vibes. Some ideas:


  • Casual everyday (jeans + cute top)
  • Dressy/fun (flowy dress, blazer, something bold)
  • School spirit (jersey, college tee, letterman jacket)
  • Hobby-focused (instruments, sports gear, art-related, etc.)


I’ll help you style and sequence your looks to make sure your final gallery has a great mix.

 

Hair & Makeup

These details make a big impact in your final photos—and how you feel in front of the camera.


Should I hire a pro?

Not required—but absolutely worth it if it’s in your budget.


  • They’re trained to do camera-friendly makeup

(which is different than everyday looks).

  • They’ll minimize shine, enhance your features,

and use tones that photograph beautifully.

  • You’ll start your shoot feeling confident, relaxed,

and a little pampered!


DIY Like a Pro:

If you’re doing your own hair and makeup,

here’s how to make it photo-ready:


  • Apply slightly more than usual (blush, brows, & lips)
  • Use a setting spray or powder to reduce shine
  • Curl your lashes and consider false lashes if you're comfortable
  • Fill in your brows—they frame your face in photos!


✨ Bonus tips:

  • Bring your makeup bag for touch-ups
  • Pack bobby pins, a comb/brush, and a travel-size hairspray
  • If you’re wearing lipstick, bring a straw so you don’t smudge it when you hydrate

 

School Rules

Planning to use your photos in the yearbook or a senior ad?

Double check: Are shoulders allowed? Midriff? Any logo rules? Most schools have at least some type of guidelines for what's allowed in the yearbook and we want to make sure you can use your photos without issue!


Make sure at least one outfit fits the guidelines.
